Mikel Arteta Describes Why Arsenal Now Have “Very Best Chance” of Winning Silverware

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta believes the club’s ambitious summer transfer window has given the Gunners their “very best chance” of ending their long wait for major trophies.

The north London club invested around £250 million to strengthen the squad, with Viktor Gyökeres, Noni Madueke, Eberechi Eze, and Martin Zubimendi among the headline arrivals.

Arsenal have not lifted the Premier League title since the 2003/04 Invincibles season, but after three consecutive second-place finishes, Arteta is confident that smart recruitment can push his side to the next level.

Arteta Praises Recruitment Strategy

Ahead of Arsenal’s UEFA Champions League opener against Athletic Club, Arteta praised sporting director Andrea Berta for being “so aggressive in the market.”

Speaking to Ally McCoist in Ally’s Social Club, Arteta said:

“It’s been excellent for what we needed, and what we wanted to achieve.

We are very lucky players want to come to Arsenal now and they prefer to go to Arsenal than somewhere else, and this is an unbelievable power as well that we have built and gives us our very best chance.

We talked last year about the Premier League and we’ve been three years there with the amount of points that normally you are the Premier League winner, but the level is somewhere that has never been before which is great.

In terms of recruitment, we’re in a much better place in terms of the squad last year. We’re trying to do everything that we can.”

From Mid-Table to Title Challengers

When Arteta was appointed in December 2019, Arsenal sat 10th in the Premier League and were far from title contention. Since then, he has revitalised the squad, restored Champions League football, and turned the Gunners into genuine challengers at the top of the table.

Arteta admitted that while expectations are now higher, they are exactly what he envisioned when taking over at the Emirates.

“I think we built those expectations, from where we were and everything that we built, that was the aim.

That was the project and what we want to do - winning major trophies consistently at the elite level.

Winning is winning trophies and a lot of things we won throughout this period, changing the culture, making a very clear identity and philosophy of the football club, transmitting an unbelievable feeling to the rest of our supporters, being in the Champions League, working towards the major trophies, winning some trophies… that’s a lot of things.”

Arsenal Eyeing Silverware This Season

With a stronger squad, Champions League football, and a clear identity under Arteta, Arsenal are once again seen as Premier League and Champions League contenders. For the Spaniard, the aim is simple: turn progress into trophies.
