Robin Roefs Reflects on Dream Week: International Call-Up and Stellar Sunderland Start

Sunderland’s new shot-stopper Robin Roefs is enjoying a whirlwind start to life in England, combining a standout Premier League debut with the honour of his first senior international call-up for the Netherlands. The 22-year-old goalkeeper, signed from NEC Nijmegen this summer, has quickly become a fan favourite on Wearside — and his performances are now turning heads on the international stage.

🧤 Making His Mark at Sunderland

Roefs wasted no time in proving his worth to manager Régis Le Bris. A clean sheet on debut against West Ham was followed by a crucial penalty save in Sunderland’s dramatic 2–1 win over Brentford, helping the Black Cats secure six points from their opening three Premier League fixtures.

Speaking to The Echo after the Brentford match, Roefs shared his pride in both his club and international achievements:

“It’s a good week. First senior national team, so I was really happy with that. But going to the national team with three points is an even better feeling.”

Roefs praised Sunderland’s tactical approach, noting the team’s ability to control possession and play proactively — even away from home.

“We showed that we could play and were not just hanging back and playing for the counter. The way we do it is really good.”

🇳🇱 A Call from Koeman

Roefs’ form earned him a spot in Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands squad for the current international break. Although he remained an unused substitute in the 3–1 win over Poland, he could feature in Sunday’s World Cup qualifier against Lithuania.

While away on duty, Roefs spoke to ESPN, reflecting on the rapid rise in his career:

“A few months ago, I might not have fully believed this. I expected a move, but how it turned out is fantastic. I’m still young for a goalkeeper, so I knew there would be interest. But the way it turned out is fantastic.”

🤝 Praise for Brobbey

Roefs also welcomed fellow Dutchman Brian Brobbey to the Stadium of Light, following the striker’s deadline-day move from Ajax. The goalkeeper believes Brobbey’s physicality and talent will be a perfect fit for the Premier League.

“He’s very strong, which is exactly what you need in the Premier League. I think he can show his qualities with us. I’m glad he’s here — he’s made a good choice.”

🔮 What’s Next?

With Sunderland defying early-season expectations and Roefs growing in stature, the future looks bright for both player and club. As the international break winds down, Roefs will return to Wearside with renewed confidence — and perhaps a debut cap in his back pocket.

For Sunderland fans, the emergence of Roefs is more than just a feel-good story. It’s a sign that the club’s summer rebuild is already paying dividends — and that their new No. 1 might just be one of the Premier League’s rising stars.
